On July 4th, Taxation Without Representation is Alive in D.C.
Washington, D.C. — On Sunday, the nation will celebrate Independence Day, when America’s founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence to end taxation without representation. The 700,000 residents of D.C. pay the most federal taxes per capita than any other state but lack voting representation in Congress.
Jamal Holtz, Lead Organizer of 51 for 51, issued the following statement:
“On July 4th, Americans celebrate the revolution to end taxation without representation and secure independence, but this injustice is alive and well in our nation’s capital over 200 years later. Thousands of people will flock to D.C. to celebrate July 4th. We welcome the merriment but urge visitors to remember they are in our home, where our community and their fellow Americans don’t have representation and access to our democracy. To honor July 4th, we ask Americans around the country to call their Senators and demand an end to taxation without representation — the only way to uphold the values of Independence Day is to make D.C. the 51st state with 51 votes in the Senate. On the heels of a historic Senate hearing on D.C. statehood, we’re closer than ever to righting this wrong.”
